Break
This is something I don’t usually shoot, break dancing falls outside my comfort zone. I didn’t need much convincing however, as I’d just received the new Canon 5dmk2 a few days prior and was eager to test it out. As you can see the camera handles beautifully with ambient light, something I am endlessly thankful for with restrictions on flash photography at live events. Even though break dancing and hip hop fall outside my personal tastes, the energy of the night was hard to resist.
Metal @ The Globe
This was one of the first live music gigs I’d shot with the 40D. Something I didn’t realise until shooting bands in smaller events like pubs, was how important stage lighting is. The light here was perfect to work with without a flash, no obnoxious strobes using deep reds and other colours which make my job that much harder. The gig was great, and the band was Vomitor.
Yomi Immaculate
My good friend Yomi had been approached by an upstart magazine ‘Immaculate Heart’, an alternative mag based in australia to provide a shoot. The concept was a cross between circus and marionette. It was one of the first and only shoots I’ve done outside and worked quite well. Unfortunately the magazine bombed and the shots were never seen by the public, until now that is.
Blah Blah Blahs
One of my favourite past times in Brisbane is heading out to see a local band and get absolutely slaughtered, then see if I can still take a photo which is in focus. This particular night was at the Elephant and Wheelbarrow in the Valley, the band, Blah Blah Blahs. When you can’t see an original band, and covers are all that’s on offer, you’d be hard pressed to find a better cover band than these guys. Lots of stage presence, strong leading man, and a drummer who loves to pose. Made for a great evening.
Dope
A really good friend of mine from Suicide Girls has been touring with Dope recently and I was fortunate enough that they hit up my city. It was great hanging out with Drew again, and even better was the stage access. Lighting was a problem, but the deep blue and red stage lights proved to only add to the atmosphere. Great night out, hope to catch up with you guys again soon.
Jabba
These guys frequent Irish Murphy’s in the city, and I’ve had many a drunken night hanging out with the band and taking ‘hopefully’ in focus shots. Here is a selection of said photography over the last two years I’ve known the guys.
Burst
Another Irish Murphy’s standby, Burst, is a band I’d never run into before. I was having a cigarette on the smoking balcony (thank you for smoking) and ran into the lead vocalist, Woody. I’d never run into them before but apparently they have been covering in Brisbane for years. Definitely hope to run into these guys again, they specialise in Aussie rock and definitely do the greats justice.
Zombie March
Ah the Brisbane Zombie march, I love it. Previous years I had shambled along with my fellow rotting citizens, covered in all kinds of goo and shredded clothing. This year however, I had a new camera and a mission. Little more freestyle than a studio shoot, but also a lot more hectic. I need to figure out how to be a zombie, and photographer, without getting gunk all over the glass.
Juke Baritone
These guys are absolutely crazy. Full of piss and vinegar, they put on one hell of a stage show. Fired up by their leading man, Juke sets the pace for the evening with a cacophony of howling laughter and a sense of diabolical mischief. If you ever get the chance to see them live, I would highly recommend it.
